SciFinder Scholar for Windows

SciFinder Scholar License Agreement

You must read and agree to the following terms before you can begin the download:

  1. I am a current faculty or administrative staff member, or officially registered student of The Ohio State University.
  2. I will use SciFinder Scholar only for my own academic research done in the course of pursuing my degree, or in instructing my students, or in the course of my own non-profit oriented research funded by the government or a research foundation and intended for the public domain.
  3. I will NOT use SciFinder Scholar for commercial research; for example, research that is done under a funding or consultant contract where the results are delivered to a for-profit organization, or for research that involves patentability searching. If I require SciFinder for commercial purposes, I will have the search done using a commercial account by contacting the librarian responsible for chemistry searches on campus, by contacting CAS and having them perform a search for me, or by acquiring and using the commercial SciFinder product.
  4. I will use my search results in the ordinary course of academic research and acknowledge that I may store search results in electronic form for the duration of research projects, provided that at any one time, I store no more than 5,000 records. I may share search results in a limited, reasonable way with other Ohio State University students or faculty working on the same project, but I will not aggregate my electronic search results with those of anyone else. I will delete stored records when I no longer need them for the relevant research project, or after the completion of my degree program, whichever occurs first. If I need to use search results beyond what is described here, I will contact my University Key Contact to discuss and to obtain CAS permission. I ACKNOWLEDGE THAT I AM NOT PERMITTED TO DISTRIBUTE ANY CAS DATA OR SCIFINDER SCHOLAR, FOR COMMERCIAL GAIN OR OTHERWISE, OUTSIDE THE UNIVERSITY OR TO THIRD PARTIES.
  5. I acknowledge that The Ohio State University has entered into a license agreement with CAS to provide me with access to SciFinder Scholar, and that violation of the license by any user could result in a termination of the license for all users.
  6. I will contact The University's Key Contact with any questions related to the use of SciFinder Scholar.

OSU Key Contact Person: Greg Ramage, ramage.13@osu.edu, 688-3346.

Install SciFinder Scholar

Note: As you're downloading the install file, the type of information that appears on your screen varies depending on the browser you're using.

  1. When the download is finished, you need to unzip the setup file.

  2. First close all windows on your desktop.

  3. Choose Run in the Start menu.

  4. Click on the Browse button in the "Run" dialog box.

  5. Locate the subdirectory where you downloaded the SciFinder Scholar software and click on the file scifi2007.exe. Click on Open and then click on OK to begin unzipping the files.

  6. When prompted for an "Unzip to Folder," use an empty temporary directory on your hard drive. Important: If you already have a version of SciFinder Scholar installed, do not extract the setup file into the same directory; doing so could damage your existing installation.

  7. Click on the Unzip button in the "WinZip Self-Extractor" window to begin extracting the files.

  8. Open the folder where you unzipped the files. Start the installation by double-clicking on the file sfs2007.exe.

  9. Follow the on-screen directions as they appear to complete the SciFinder installation. When prompted "Do you have a disk labeled Custom Site Files," answer No.

  10. When asked "Do you want to install SciFinder Scholar Toolbar now?" answer Yes or No, as appropriate to your situation.

The SciFinder Scholar Toolbar allows you to access CAS searches from the Internet/Explorer Toolbar. Once the SciFinder Scholar toolbar has been installed, right-click on a blank area of the I/E Toolbar and you should see the I/E Toolbar Menu. Click on the SciFinder Scholar Toolbar entry to have it appear permanently in the I/E headers along with the other toolbars. It can be moved using drag and drop just like other I/E native toolbars. You can receive help on use of the SciFinder Toolbar by clicking on the SciFinder Scholar icon on the toolbar just to the left of Explore.

  11. Important: Before using the software, you must copy the file site.prf from the download folder into the main folder you chose for the SciFinder installation. If you do not do this, your copy will not run.

Access is limited to eight simultaneous users from 8:00 am Sunday to 6:00 pm Saturday.
