McAfee VirusScan License Agreement

Important: You should have the latest version of Stuffit Expander, or at least version 6.5, for proper operation of the file expansion.

You also must read and agree to the following terms before you can begin the download:

This software is provided to you under an agreement between The Ohio State University and McAfee. Under the terms of the license agreement, current faculty, staff, and students may use this software while they are associated with the university. This license is nontransferable. When you are no longer a current faculty or staff member, you must leave this software with your department and also remove any copies from your home computer.

This software is obtained from McAfee on a two-year term. Should OIT not renew this license, you agree to remove all copies of the software in your control and discontinue all use.

The software is for use on The Ohio State University main and regional campuses and on your home computer. You are authorized to install this software on one computer on campus and at home unless specifically authorized by OIT as a departmental computer support representative.

If you are authorized to install multiple copies, you must advise anyone who is using or receiving any of those copies that they are prohibited from distributing, modifying, or making copies of the software, and you must supply them with the terms of this agreement.

This software is protected by both United States copyright laws and international treaty provisions. Each installed copy of the program is registered with the Office of Information Technology as a function of your agreeing with these terms. Archival copies of this software may be made for the sole purpose of backing up your software.

Download VirusScan

First read the information that follows about downloading and installing the software and then signify your acceptance of the preceding license terms by clicking below.

Because of licensing restrictions, you'll be connected to a secure sever once you click the "I agree" link above. You'll be required to enter your OSU Internet username and password to access this server.

Install VirusScan

Important: You must uninstall any other antivirus program before installing this program. You can upgrade to VirusScan for Mac V8.6 from earlier VirusScan versions (8.0 and 8.5). After the upgrade, the preferences are migrated from the earlier versions to the current version (V8.6). Consult the "ReadMe.txt" file provided with this download. 

  1. When the install file has finished downloading and uncompressing, you're ready to start the setup program.

  2. Open the folder where you downloaded the install file and then open the folder VirusScan 8.6 Update (you may need to double-click a file called vsscan8_6x.hqx to extract this folder).

  3. Open the folder called VSM86LML and double-click Virusscan 8.6.dmg to produce the file "Virusscan.pkg."

    Note: The VirusScan 8.6 Update folder also contains a User Guide as well as a "ReadMe.txt" file. Please review this file.

  4. Double-click Virusscan.pkg to start the installer.

  5. When the VirusScan splash screen appears, click the Continue button. Note: If prompted about running a program to determine if the software can be installed, click Continue to display the splash screen.

  6. Some information about minimum requirements and new features appears. When you're finished reading, click the Continue button.

  7. Read the Software License Agreement, click the Continue button, and then click Agree.

  8. When prompted for a destination, check to see the proper volume is selected, and click Continue. The installer installs VirusScan in the Applications folder.

  9. When prompted to perform a basic installation, click Install (or Upgrade if applicable).

  10. Enter your administrator username (if necessary) and password to continue.

Note: The VirusScan Product Guide is included with your installation in the VirusScan 8.6 Update folder that contains the install file.

You may want to set a scanning policy. Do this by clicking VirusScan in the menu and selecting Preferences. You also can set schedules by going to VirusScan Schedule Editor in the Utilities folder.

Update VirusScan DAT Files

The VirusScan installer comes with a back-level virus definitions file which needs to be updated. When you start VirusScan, it automatically connects to the default FTP site and performs the update which may take 3 to 5 minutes to complete. Subsequently, you can update your DAT files via OIT Software Downloads at http://osusls.osu.edu/stg2mac.html or by clicking eUpdate to go to the Network Associates, Inc. FTP site.

You also can customize eUpdate to go to the local OSU repository of DAT files.

  1. Click VirusScan in the menu and select Preferences
  2. Click the lock icon at the bottom of the page.
    • If necessary and enter your administrator password to allow changes to your preferences.
  3. Check Customize eUpdate server settings and then click Customize
  4. Input the following information:
    • Server URL: vscan.osu.edu
    • Username: anonymous
    • Password: your email address (e.g., jdoe@osu.edu)
    • Directory: /vscanupdate/
  5. Click OK - Close the preferences window
